Quizlet's mission statement reads, “Our mission is simple: to help students (and their teachers) practice and master whatever they are learning. Quizlet provides engaging, customizable activities with contributions from people everywhere.” Quizlet is an online tool, that is free in its regular version, that allows users to create custom study sets and practice their sets in a variety of ways. Users can choose to share their sets, teachers can create study sets to share with their students, and people all over the world can help one another learn. Quizlet is a revolutionized way to study, offering learners a new way to reach success.
Creating an Account. Quizlet requires the user register their email and create an account to make their own sets. Unregistered users can browse already created sets submitted by other Quizlet users. To register, link your information from Google or Facebook. Or enter a birthday, create a username, enter an email address, and create a password. After entering this information, there is a box to check if the user is a teacher. After completing the registration, the user will be prompted to upgrade to Quizlet Plus. And the following box will appear:
If selected, Quizlet Plus costs $1.67 per month or $19.99 a year, subscriptions will automatically renew. The benefits Quizlet Plus offers include abilities to add images and enhanced audio. If the user would like the free version, “continue” should be selected to access Quizlet’s main interface. For this reference, the free version of Quizlet will be explored.
Creating Sets. "Sets" in Quizlet are pairs of terms and their respective definitions. Sets should be grouped into the same topics, chapters, or subjects. Text-based sets are terms and definitions with optional images. Diagram sets are images with labeled locations, terms and definitions. Once an account has been created the Quizlet home screen will appear.
Next, to create a new set the user will click the blue box (shown in the red rectangle) that states, “create a new set.” The following box will appear:
Again, choose "create a study set."

First (1), enter the title of the study set. This can be the chapter name, the subject, or the unit. It should identify the subject matter of the set. Steps 2 and 3 are optional, but the user can choose who their study set is visible to (2) and add editors, like classmates, to their set (3). Next (4), the user enters the term. After the term is entered, the definition should be entered in the right-hand column (5). When entering a definition, the user can choose to use the “Auto-Define” feature and select a definition from a number of definitions populated from online sources.
Other tools that can be used when entering definitions are adding an image and adding a voice recording.

Definitions can also be imported from Word, Excel, or Google Docs, there are a variety of sorting options to help the user easily sort their documents quickly and efficiently. There are no limitations to how many terms and definitions that can be added.
Once terms and definitions have been added the screen should look like the following:
The user can continue to add cards to the set, and when finished, will select the blue box labeled “done.”

Adding a Diagram. Quizlet allows users to insert and label diagrams. Diagrams can also be used in the study features as well. Before adding terms to a set, the following box appears:
To add a diagram, the user will either drag and drop and image, or choose an image from file. The image will upload.
The user has two edit options in the free version of Quizlet, panning the image, and adding a point.
Panning the image allows the user to scroll across the image to view it from different perspectives. Adding a point allows the user to add text and definitions at any point on the diagram.
Here is an example of how a diagram can be used in on a map to teach terms.
Learning Tools in Quizlet. Once a set is completed, the user can use seven different tools to study in a variety of different methods. Created sets provide the subject matter for each of the tools. These methods are; Learn, Flashcards, Write, Spell, Test, Match, and Gravity. These tools range from more traditional ways of studying like flashcards, to game-like methods like Gravity.
Learn. Learn uses adaptive learning to help teach the user, and reviews what they miss in study sessions. In this tool, a definition is given, and the user must type the matching term. Audio is provided so the user can listen. The users progress is tracked. If the user doesn’t know the answer, it is given, and the user must copy the term correctly. To use Learn, type in the term underneath the definition. Click the speaker icon to listen to the audio of both the term and the definition. If the answer is unknown, choose “don’t know” and copy the correct answer into the blank. Click through the whole round, repeat until mastered.

Flashcards. Flashcards gives individual definitions, from the selected set, on digital flashcards. There is an option to “click to flip” which reveals the correct term on the opposite side of the flashcard. The flashcards cycle through all the terms and allows the user to complete the set and start over. There are options to auto-play through all the cards and shuffle them to mix the order. To use Flashcards, click through the set using the blue arrows, use the “play” feature if desired, and occasionally shuffle the cards. Complete the set and review.

If the correct answer is unknown, choose “don’t know” and copy the correct definition into the blank. Click the speaker icon to listen to both the term and definition. Answer each question in the set to review the terms.

Spell. Spell plays the audio of a given term and provides a written definition. The user then types in what they hear. To use Spell, type in the audio that will automatically play. If help is needed read the definition provided below. Once the answer is typed, pressed enter to continue through the set. Repeat the rounds to practice spelling and recall Track progress made on the left-hand side of the screen.
Test. The Test tool phrases terms and definitions from a set, into a test type format. The question styles include; fill in the blank, multiple choice, and true and false. The user can print the test to use as a study guide. To use Test, first, type each answer in the provided blank in the written questions section. Next, click the circle of the correct answer for each multiple-choice question. Lastly, choose either true or false for each of the questions in the true or false question set. When finished, press the blue “check answers” box. The test will be graded. If questions are answered wrong, the right answers will be given. To retake the test with regenerated questions, choose the blue box titled, “create new test.” Repeat the test to practice giving correct answers in different formats. See the diagram below for tips on completing the test.

Match. Match is an interactive game-based tool. The user clicks and drags a term onto the correct definition, or vice versa. To play Match, drag the corresponding items onto each other to make them disappear. Once all sets disappear, the game is complete. Do this quickly as the matching is timed! Users can compete against one another for placement onto the leaderboard. Playing the Match game unlocks “badges” which ranks users against one another. Repeat the game to practice speed recall.

Gravity. Gravity is the most game-like tool Quizlet offers. Asteroids fall from the sky with definitions. To win the game, the user must quickly type the term matching the falling definition before the asteroid touches Earth. Before starting the game, the user can pick different options for their play mode including; choosing whether terms, definitions, or a random mixture of both fall, the use of specific starred terms or all terms, and the difficulty level ranging from easy to hard. To play Gravity, choose the game play options, and click the blue “let’s go” button to begin. As the asteroids fall, type the matching term to the falling definition. If a term is missed twice, the game is over. Using this tool, one can practice their knowledge in a fun and interactive way. Users can compete against one another to be ranked on a leaderboard that is set specific.

Connecting on Quizlet. Quizlet allows users to search sets created by other users. Both diagrams and sets can be found when searched by subject. Users can also search for classes, create classes, and find other friends on Quizlet by linking their account to Facebook. To search for specific content, locate the search bar indicated by a magnifying glass in the top left-hand corner. Type in a class or subject and press enter. Results will populate.
